Another Long Drive

Today was another long drive from Elko to Yellowstone. Yet again it was mile upon mile of straight roads. So not much to talk about, the only highlight was when we hit a little rain. So I whipped out the camera and shot a little video.

Upon arriving in West Yellowstone we headed to Moose Creek cabins dropped off all the luggage and headed out for tea. On the way in we had noticed a small wooden shack selling Bison burgers. So I had to give one a try. It tasted fantastic, the meat was so tender and sweet and the salad garnish was incredibly fresh probably the best burger I have ever tasted.

Elko

Today has been spent in Elko. We are using it as a stop over to break up the long drive between Yosemite and Yellowstone.

Elko seems to be lacking in tourist attractions but the one not to miss is the worlds biggest stuffed polar bear. So we headed down to commercial casino to have our picture taken. The bear weighs in at over 2000lbs and stands 10 feet 4 inches.

After visiting the giant polar bear we noticed there was a little museum so we thought we would pop in. I have never seen such a large amount of dead animals in one area! They even had a trophy room which was a true spectacle.

Here we see Sian pointing at a giant Moose trophy

And some rather fetching Elephants feet stools

I am currently trying to stitch together a panorama shot of one of the side trophy rooms I will upload if it works

11 Hour Drive

Today was taken up by an incredibly long drive 591 miles to Elko via Virginia City.

We set off incredibly early so we could arrive at Virginia City around lunch time. This worked out well and I ate an incredibly nice meatball sub. Sian seemed to find it incredibly funny to photograph this so I am sure evidence will be on her website shortly.

Of the 591 miles 298 of the miles were on one continuos piece of road so I snapped a few pics of the road and anything of interest that passed by.

River Rafting

While on the green dragon yesterday we noticed quite a few people on rafts. So today we decided to rent a raft and take a trip down the Merced river.

The views were amazing and it was incredibly relaxing to just float down the river. Well the relaxation was broken now and again by the panic set in by us being slightly inexperienced in our boating pursuits and banging into a few rocks.

A picture speaks a thousand words and in this case a youtube video, so below is one of the many views we had.

As a side note todays pack lunch was fantastic salami and provolone cheese OM OM OM!!!!

TV Stars

On the way down John Muir trail yesterday we bumped into a rather nice american hiker. We spoke for a while and he mentioned a few things we should really do while at Yosemite.

Taking his advice we rode the green dragon today, which is basically a flat bed truck with seats which tours the Yosemite valley. We arrived a little later than we would of liked so we could only get a ride on the 11am tour.

So we arrived at 11am to see a TV crew interviewing people about the new hybrid vehicles the green dragon uses. Sian and myself were interviewed and rather uncharacteristically Sian did all the talking! After the interview we became part of the ribbon cutting ceremony as well.

The tour itself was fantastic and gives a brilliant view of the valley itself. Would highly recommend it if anyone is visiting. Again Sian will be uploading photos from the tour.

Oh last night we also went to a brilliant diner called “Happy Burger Diner” it was a total locals joint. The waiting staff knew everyone by name and the food was fantastic. I will tweet pics!
